There are a number of traditions for weddings that have survived into the 21st century. It is still traditional for the bride and groom to have their own parties the night before getting married. The groom’s party is called a ‘Stag party’, while the bride’s is known as a ‘Hen party’.
On the morning of the wedding, the groom should not see the bride. If he does, this is bad luck. The bride puts on her special wedding dress, which is usually white. She also needs to wear ‘something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue’.
At the church, or registry office, the bride and groom exchange rings before walking together back down the aisle. When they get outside, the bride throws her bouquet in the air. Tradition says that whoever catches it will be the next person to get married.
But it’s not only the bride who throws something. All the people at the wedding throw confetti and rice over the happy couple. Finally, after the reception, the bride and groom drive off to have their honeymoon.

The Great Romantic
Lord Byron (1788-1824) didn’t live a long life. He was an aristocrat and a fashionable man. But he loved freedom (свободу) and a simple country life. His personality attracted Britain and all Europe. He brought to his poetry romanticism of his times. He was talented and handsome, noble and brave. London admired him.
George Gordon Byron was born on January 22nd, 1788. He was the son of John Byron and his wife, Catherine, whose ancestors (предки) were of the royal house of Stuart. He spent his early years outside the capital. He lived in the north.
Later his mother took him to Aberdeen. There they lived for several years. George went to Aberdeen Grammar School and there is a monument to him outside the school. Now it is a museum and art gallery.
Later he studied at Harrow School and the University of Cambridge.
When Byron was 19, he came to London. One day the poet wrote, “I woke up (проснулся) and found myself (обнаружил, что я) famous.” It happened after the publication of his autobiographic poem “Childe Harold” in 1812.
The fact is that from 1809 to 1811 he had traveled in different parts of Europe and in the poem he described everything that had happened to him.
In the summer of 1816 Byron left Britain forever (навсегда). He traveled around Europe and soon he became a member of the Greek liberation movement (освободительное движение), for which he died. But he did not lead the Greeks in battle as he wished. He died of fever (лихорадка). (262 words)

The 25th of December is Christmas Day. It’s a happy holiday for many people in different countries.
Some week before Christmas English people are busy. They send greeting cards to all their relatives and friends. You can buy Christmas cards or you can make them. Many children make their cards at school.
People buy a Christmas tree and decorate it with toys, coloured balls and little coloured lights.
On Christmas Eve people put their presents under the tree. When children go to bed, they put their stockings near their beds.
At night Father Christmas comes. He has got a big bag of presents for children. He puts the presents in the children’s stockings.
Every year there is a very big Christmas tree in the centre of London, in Trafalgar Square. This is a present from the people of Norway to the people of Great Britain. They send it to Londoners every year and Londoners decorate the Christmas tree.

Jim and Della
Jim and Della were two young people, husband and wife. They loved each other dearly. They lived in a small room in an old house in one of the dirty streets of New York. They worked from early morning till late at night, but they got very little money for their work. And still they had two things which were very dear to them – Jim’s watch and Della’s beautiful hair.
Christmas was coming and Della wanted to give Jim a nice present, but she had no money. She really didn’t know what to do. She sat on the sofa and began to cry. Suddenly an idea came to her. She got up and stood in front of the mirror and looked at her beautiful long hair. Then she left the house and in a few minutes she was already at hairdresser’s shop.
“Will you buy my hair?” she asked. The hairdresser looked at her hair and said, “Yes, I will. It’s fine hair. I can give you twenty dollars for it.” Della was very happy. She took the money and went to buy a present for her husband. In one of the shops she saw a very beautiful watch-chain. “I’ll buy it, Jim will be very glad,” she said to herself. “He needs a chain for his watch.”
So Della bought a gold watch-chain as a Christmas present for Jim. When she got home, Jim was already there waiting for her. He looked at his smiling little wife and understood everything.
“Why did you do it?” he asked.
“Dear Jim, my hair will grow and I wanted to give you a present. Here it is,” and she put the watch-chain into his hand.

There was once a very rich man. He had three cars and two houses and
many other things.
One day he said, «I am getting old. I’m going to sell
everything and buy a big piece of gold. »
He sold his houses and his cars and everything and he bought a very
big piece of gold. He dug a hole near a tree, and he put the piece of
gold into the hole. «No one will find my gold here», he
said.
Every day he went back and dug up the gold. He looked at it and said,
«Good! My gold is there». Then he put the gold back into
the hole and put the earth back on top of it.
But one day there was a man behind the tree. He was a thief and he
was asleep. The rich man didn’t see the thief. He dug up the
gold and looked at it. «Good! » he said, «My gold
is there». The thief woke up and looked round the tree. «What
is the man putting into the hole? » he thought. «I’m
going to find out».
The rich man put the gold back into the
hole and went away. Then the thief went to the hole and dug up the
gold. «A big piece of gold! » he said. «It’s
my gold now. I am a rich man. » He ran off with the gold and
never came back. The next day the first man came back and began to
dig.
He dug and he dug but he did not find the gold. «My gold
is not here», he said. «I am not a rich man now. I have
no gold! » and he began to cry. Then he went home and told one
of his friends. His friend said, «Don’t cry. Here is a
big stone. Take it and put it in the hole.
Then every day you can go
and dig it up and look at it». A piece of gold in a hole is no

A Good Lesson (Хороший урок)
Once a rich Englishwoman called Mrs Johnson decided to have a birthday party. She invited a lot of guests and a singer. The singer was poor, but he had a very good voice.
The singer got to Mrs Johnson’s house at exactly six o’clock as he had been asked to do, but when he went in, he saw through a door that the dining-room was already full of guests, who were sitting round a big table in the middle of the room. The guests were eating, joking, laughing, and talking loudly.
Mrs Johnson came out to him, and he thought she was going to ask him to join them, when she said, «We’re glad, sir, that you have come. You will be singing after dinner, I’ll call you as soon as we’re ready to listen to you. Now will you go into the kitchen and have dinner, too, please?»
The singer was very angry, but said nothing. At first he wanted to leave Mrs Johnson’s house at once, but then he changed his mind and decided to stay and teach her and her rich guests a good lesson. When the singer went into the kitchen, the servants were having dinner, too. He joined them.
After dinner, the singer thanked everybody and said, «Well, now I’m going to sing to you, my good friends.» And he sang them some beautiful songs.
Soon Mrs Johnson called the singer.
«Well, sir, we’re ready.»
«Ready?» asked the singer. «What are you ready for?»
«To listen to you,» said Mrs Johnson in an angry voice.
«Listen to me? But I have already sung, and I’m afraid I shan’t be able to sing any more tonight.»
«Where did you sing?»
«In the kitchen. I always sing for those I have dinner with.»

The Shoebox (Коробка от обуви)
A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that the little old woman had a shoebox in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about.
For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover.
In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoebox and took it to his wife’s bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two knitted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000.
He asked her about the contents.
‘When we were to be married,’ she said, ‘ my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and knit a doll.’
The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness.
- ‘Honey,’ he said, ‘that explains the dolls, but what about all of this money?
- Where did it come from?’
- ‘Oh,’ she said, ‘that’s the money I made from selling the dolls.’

Jenny and Robert Slater were on holiday in America. They were young and it was their first time away from home in England. They had a car and visited many famous and interesting places.
‘I want to see New York,’ Jenny said one morning. ‘Let’s go there.’
‘Mmm, I don’t know, love. Everybody says New York’s a dangerous place and there are a lot of very strange people there,’ her husband answered.
‘We’ll be careful,’ said Jenny. ‘Then we won’t have any problems.’
So they arrived in New York early in the evening and found a hotel. Later they went out and drove round the streets. They didn’t have any problems. ‘See,’ Jenny said. ‘Nothing to be afraid of.’
They had dinner in a good restaurant and then went to a cinema. They arrived back at their hotel at midnight. Under the hotel was a garage so they drove into it and left the car. It was quite dark there and they couldn’t see very well.
‘Where’s the lift?’ Jenny asked.
