Past Perfect

Past Simple.

  • I had a shower.
  • I finished breakfast.

  • When you had a shower, you had already finished your breakfast.

Past Perfect-Continuous.

Например: in February, 2019, Friday, summer тому подобное.

  • I had already applied to school in February.
  • I had already passed an exam by Friday.

  •  I saw you at a party last week, you had a big smile on your face.

  • I was smiling because I had drunk a whole bottle of champagne.
  • Yes, I had got a promotion.

  • I finished work late and then I had problems on the way home and then couldn’t believe my eyes when I got home.

‘When I arrived home I realized I’d been burgled. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The burglars:

  • had broken down the door
  • had left my papers and photos all over the floor
  • had locked my cat in the bathroom
  • had taken my… ( a special item)
  • had broken a the window
  • had stolen my laptop
  • had eaten the cake I’d bought for my son’s birthday.

Past Perfect.

  • Parents arrive home from holiday having left you in charge of the house. They soon realize you had had a big party while they were away.

Start: When they arrived home they saw…

  • A teacher came back into the class and realized she shouldn’t have left the students on their own for that long.

Start: She walked back in and saw…

  • Why did you say ‘I’m sorry’ to your friend?
  • Why did you say ‘I hope so’ to your teacher?
  • Why did you say ‘ I can’t’ to your classmate?

  • I had forgotten her birthday.
  • I had not passed my homework.
  • I had been busy.

Past Perfect Continuous

Past Perfect Continuous:

  • Bob had been waiting for more than 2 hours when Mary finally arrived. –

Новичкам в Past Perfect Continuous сложнее всего дается написание окончания -ing у глаголов и изменение глагола to be с разными местоимениями.

  • play => playing (играть)
  • laugh => laughing (смеяться)
  • do => doing (делать)

bake => baking (печь)

lie => lying (лгать)

  • beg – begging (умолять),
  • begin – beginning (начать),
  • regret – regretting (сожалеть)

  Bob was tired because he had been jogging for 2 hours. Mary and Bob had been living together for 5 years when they finally bought a flat.
