Little Red Riding Hood (Красная Шапочка)

Part 1

This is the story of Little Red Riding Hood. She’s got a red coat with a hood. She loves the coat. She wears it every day. She’s very happy today. It’s her birthday. Little Red Riding Hood’s father is a woodcutter. He works in the forest every day.

A lot of animals live in the forest, and a wolf lives there too! Little Red Riding Hood’s mother says: «Grandmother is ill in bed. Go to her house. Take her some bread and jam. But be careful! A wolf lives in the forest!» «Yes, Mother,» says Little Red Riding Hood.

Little Red Riding Hood loves Grandmother. She is happy. She wants to see her.

Part 2

Little Red Riding Hood goes into the forest. She sees a wolf! She isn’t afraid of him and she talks to him. «Hello!» she says. «Good morning,» says the wolf. «What’s your name?» «Little Red Riding Hood. I’m going to Grandmother’s house,» she says. «What’s in your basket?» asks the wolf «Some bred and jam. Grandmother is ill,» says Little Red Riding Hood.

«Where does Grandmother live?» asks the wolf. «She lives in a small house in the forest,» says Little Red Riding Hood. «Little Red Riding Hood looks nice. I want to eat her and Grandmother,» the wolf thinks. «I am fast. I can run. I know what I can do…» The wolf runs to Grandmother’s house. He runs very quickly. He wants to eat Grandmother.

The wolf knocks on Grandmother’s door.

«Who is it?» asks Grandmother. «Little Red Riding Hood,» says the wolf. «I’ve got some bread and jam for you.» «Come in,» says Grandmother. The wolf runs in. «Help!» shouts Grandmother. «Don’t eat me!» She jumps into the wardrobe. «I will eat you later!» says the wolf.

Now the wolf is wearing Grandmother’s night-cap. He’s in Grandmother’s bed. He’s waiting for Little Red Riding Hood. She knocks on the door. «Who is it?» asks the wolf. «Little Red Riding Hood,» she says. «I’ve got some bread and jam for you.» «Come in», says the wolf.

«I’m ill in bed.»

Once upon a time there was a dear little girl who was loved by everyone who looked at her, but most of all by her grandmother, and there was nothing that she would not have given to the child. Once she gave her a little cap of red velvet, which suited her so well that she would never wear anything else; so she was always called ‘Little Red-Cap.’

One day her mother said to her: ‘Come, Little Red-Cap, here is a piece of cake and a bottle of wine; take them to your grandmother, she is ill and weak, and they will do her good.

Set out before it gets hot, and when you are going, walk nicely and quietly and do not run off the path, or you may fall and break the bottle, and then your grandmother will get nothing; and when you go into her room, don’t forget to say, “Good morning”, and don’t peep into every corner before you do it.’

‘I will take great care,’ said Little Red-Cap to her mother, and gave her hand on it.

The grandmother lived out in the wood, half a league from the village, and just as Little Red-Cap entered the wood, a wolf met her. Red-Cap did not know what a wicked creature he was, and was not at all afraid of him.

  • ‘Good day, Little Red-Cap,’ said he.
  • ‘Thank you kindly, wolf.’
  • ‘Whither away so early, Little Red-Cap?’
  • ‘To my grandmother’s.’
  • ‘What have you got in your apron?’
  • ‘Cake and wine; yesterday was baking-day, so poor sick grandmother is to have something good, to make her stronger.’
  • ‘Where does your grandmother live, Little Red-Cap?’
  • ‘A good quarter of a league farther on in the wood; her house stands under the three large oak-trees, the nut-trees are just below; you surely must know it,’ replied Little Red-Cap.

The wolf thought to himself: ‘What a tender young creature! what a nice plump mouthful—she will be better to eat than the old woman. I must act craftily, so as to catch both.

’ So he walked for a short time by the side of Little Red-Cap, and then he said: ‘See, Little Red-Cap, how pretty the flowers are about here—why do you not look round? I believe, too, that you do not hear how sweetly the little birds are singing; you walk gravely along as if you were going to school, while everything else out here in the wood is merry.’

Little Red-Cap raised her eyes, and when she saw the sunbeams dancing here and there through the trees, and pretty flowers growing everywhere, she thought: ‘Suppose I take grandmother a fresh nosegay; that would please her too.

It is so early in the day that I shall still get there in good time’; and so she ran from the path into the wood to look for flowers.

And whenever she had picked one, she fancied that she saw a still prettier one farther on, and ran after it, and so got deeper and deeper into the wood.

Meanwhile the wolf ran straight to the grandmother’s house and knocked at the door.

‘Who is there?’

‘Little Red-Cap,’ replied the wolf. ‘She is bringing cake and wine; open the door.’

‘Lift the latch,’ called out the grandmother, ‘I am too weak, and cannot get up.’

The wolf lifted the latch, the door sprang open, and without saying a word he went straight to the grandmother’s bed, and devoured her. Then he put on her clothes, dressed himself in her cap laid himself in bed and drew the curtains.

Once upon a time there lived in a certain village a little country girl, the prettiest creature who was ever seen. Her mother was excessively fond of her; and her grandmother doted on her still more. This good woman had a little red riding hood made for her. It suited the girl so extremely well that everybody called her Little Red Riding Hood.

One day her mother, having made some cakes, said to her, «Go, my dear, and see how your grandmother is doing, for I hear she has been very ill. Take her a cake, and this little pot of butter.”

Little Red Riding Hood set out immediately to go to her grandmother, who lived in another village.

As she was going through the wood, she met with a wolf, who had a very great mind to eat her up, but he dared not, because of some woodcutters working nearby in the forest.

He asked her where she was going.

The poor child, who did not know that it was dangerous to stay and talk to a wolf, said to him, «I am going to see my grandmother and carry her a cake and a little pot of butter from my mother.”

«Does she live far off?” said the wolf

«Oh I say,” answered Little Red Riding Hood; «it is beyond that mill you see there, at the first house in the village.”

«Well,” said the wolf, «and I’ll go and see her too. I’ll go this way and go you that, and we shall see who will be there first.”

The wolf ran as fast as he could, taking the shortest path, and the little girl took a roundabout way, entertaining herself by gathering nuts, running after butterflies, and gathering bouquets of little flowers. It was not long before the wolf arrived at the old woman’s house. He knocked at the door: tap, tap.

  • «Who’s there?”
  • «Your grandchild, Little Red Riding Hood,” replied the wolf, counterfeiting her voice; «who has brought you a cake and a little pot of butter sent you by mother.”
  • The good grandmother, who was in bed, because she was somewhat ill, cried out, «Pull the string, and the latch will go up.”

The wolf pulled the string n, and the door opened, and then he immediately fell upon the good woman and ate her up in a moment, for it been more than three days since he had eaten. He then shut the door and got into the grandmother’s bed, expecting Little Red Riding Hood, who came some time afterwards and knocked at the door: tap, tap.

  1. «Who’s there?”
  2. Little Red Riding Hood, hearing the big voice of the wolf, was at first afraid; but believing her grandmother had a cold and was hoarse, answered, «It is your grandchild Little Red Riding Hood, who has brought you a cake and a little pot of butter mother sends you.”
  3. The wolf cried out to her, softening his voice as much as he could, «Pull the string, and the latch will go up.”
  4. Little Red Riding Hood pulled the string, and the door opened.
  5. The wolf, seeing her come in, said to her, hiding himself under the bedclothes, «Put the cake and the little pot of butter upon the stool, and come sit on the bed with me.”

Little Red Riding Hood sat on the bed. She was greatly amazed to see how her grandmother looked in her nightclothes, and said to her, «Grandmother, what big arms you have!”

  • «All the better to hug you with, my dear.”
  • «Grandmother, what big legs you have!”
  • «All the better to run with, my child.”
  • «Grandmother, what big ears you have!”
  • «All the better to hear with, my child.”
  • «Grandmother, what big eyes you have!”
  • «All the better to see with, my child.”
  • «Grandmother, what big teeth you have got!”
  • «All the better to eat you up with.”
  • And, saying these words, this wicked wolf fell upon Little Red Riding Hood, and ate her all up.

The woodcutters were passing by the house. They heard the noise, rushed to the house and killed the wolf. And out came Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother. They were safe and sound and very happy!

There was a miller whose only inheritance to his three sons was his mill, his donkey, and his cat. The division was soon made. The eldest took the mill, the second the donkey, and the youngest took the cat.

The poor young fellow was quite comfortless because he received so little. “My brothers,” said he, “may make a handsome living by joining their shares together; but, for my part, after I have eaten up my cat, and made myself a muff from his skin, I must then die of hunger.”

The cat, who heard all this, but pretended otherwise, said to him serious, “Do not be so concerned, my good master. If you will give me a bag, and have a pair of boots made for me, that I may scamper through the dirt and the brambles, then you shall see that you are not so poorly off with me as you imagine.”

The cat’s master did not believe him very much. However, he had often seen him play a great many cunning tricks to catch rats and mice,[1] such as hanging by his heels, or hiding himself in the meal, and pretending to be dead; so he did take some hope that he might give him some help in his miserable condition.[2]

After receiving what he had asked for, the cat gallantly pulled on the boots and slung the bag about his neck. Holding its drawstrings in his forepaws,[3] he went to a place where there were a lot of rabbits. He put some bran and greens into his bag, then laid down as if he were dead. He waited for some young rabbits to come and look into his bag.

Soon a rash and foolish young rabbit jumped into his bag, and the master cat immediately closed the strings, then took and killed him without pity.[4]

Proud of his prey, he went with it to the palace, and asked to speak with his majesty. He was shown upstairs into the king’s apartment,[5] and, making a low bow,[6] said to him, “Sir, I have brought you a rabbit from my noble lord,[7] the Master of Carabas” (for that was the title which the cat was pleased to give his master).

“Tell your master,” said the king, “that I thank him, and that I am very pleased with his gift.”

Another time he went and hid himself in a grain field. He again held his bag open, and when a brace of partridges[8] ran into it, he drew the strings, and caught them both.

He presented these to the king, as he had done before with the rabbit. The king received the partridges with great pleasure and gave him a tip.

The cat continued, from time to time[9] for two or three months, to take game[10] to his majesty from his master.

One day, when he knew for certain[11] that the king would be taking a drive along the riverside with his daughter, the most beautiful princess in the world, he said to his master, “If you will follow my advice your fortune is made. All you must do is to go and bathe yourself in the river at the place I show you, then leave the rest to me.”

The Marquis of Carabas did what the cat advised him to, without knowing why.[12] While he was bathing the king passed by in his coach, and the cat began to cry out, “Help! Help! My Lord Marquis of Carabas is going to be drowned.”

The Master Cat, or Puss in Boots

Once upon a time there was a miller who left no more riches to the three sons he had than his mill, his ass, and his cat. The division was soon made. Neither the lawyer nor the attorney was sent for. They would soon have eaten up all the poor property. The eldest had the mill, the second the ass, and the youngest nothing but the cat.

  • The youngest, as we can understand, was quite unhappy at having so poor a share.
  • «My brothers,» said he, «may get their living handsomely enough by joining their stocks together; but, for my part, when I have eaten up my cat, and made me a muff of his skin, I must die of hunger.»
  • The Cat, who heard all this, without appearing to take any notice, said to him with a grave and serious air:—
  • «Do not thus afflict yourself, my master; you have nothing else to do but to give me a bag, and get a pair of boots made for me, that I may scamper through the brambles, and you shall see that you have not so poor a portion in me as you think.»

Though the Cat's master did not think much of what he said, he had seen him play such cunning tricks to catch rats and mice—hanging himself by the heels, or hiding himself in the meal, to make believe he was dead—that he did not altogether despair of his helping him in his misery.

When the Cat had what he asked for, he booted himself very gallantly, and putting his bag about his neck, he held the strings of it in his two forepaws, and went into a warren where was a great number of rabbits.

He put bran and sow-thistle into his bag, and, stretching out at length, as if he were dead, he waited for some young rabbits, not yet acquainted with the deceits of the world, to come and rummage his bag for what he had put into it.

Scarcely was he settled but he had what he wanted. A rash and foolish young rabbit jumped into his bag, and Monsieur Puss, immediately drawing close the strings, took him and killed him at once. Proud of his prey, he went with it to the palace, and asked to speak with the King. He was shown upstairs into his Majesty's apartment, and, making a low bow to the King, he said:—

«I have brought you, sire, a rabbit which my noble Lord, the Master of Carabas» (for that was the title which Puss was pleased to give his master) «has commanded me to present to your Majesty from him.»

«Tell thy master,» said the King, «that I thank him, and that I am pleased with his gift.»

Сказка Little Red Riding Hood — Красная шапочка

Once upon a time… in the middle of a thick forest stood a small cottage, the home of a pretty little girl known to everyone as Little Red Riding Hood. One day, her Mummy waved her goodbye at the garden gate, saying, «Grandma is ill. Take her this basket of cakes, but be very careful. Keep to the path through the wood and don't ever stop. That way, you will come to no harm.»

Little Red Riding Hood kissed her mother and ran off. «Don't worry», she said, «I'll run all the way to Grandma's without stopping».

Full of good intensions, the little girl made her way through the wood, but she was soon to forget her mother's wise words. «What lovely strawberries! And so red…»

Laying her basket on the ground, Little Red Riding Hood bent over the strawberry plants. «They're nice and ripe, and so big! Yummy! Delicious! Just another one. And one more. This is the last… Well, this one… Mmmm.»

The red fruit peeped invitingly through the leaves in the grassy glade, and Little Red Riding Hood ran back and forth popping strawberries into her mouth. Suddenly she remembered her mother, her promise, Grandma and the basket… and hurried back towards the path. The basket was still in the grass and, humming to herself, Little Red Riding Hood walked on.

The wood became thicker and thicker. Suddenly a yellow butterfly fluttered down through the trees. Little Red Riding Hood started to chase the butterfly.

«I'll catch you! I'll catch you!» she called. Suddenly she saw some large daisies in the grass.

«Oh, how sweet!» she exclaimed and, thinking of Grandma, she picked a large bunch of flowers.

In the meantime, two wicked eyes were spying on her from behind a tree… a strange rustling in the woods made Little Red Riding Hood's heart thump.

Now quite afraid, she said to herself, 'I must find the path and run away from here!»

At last, she reached the path again, but her heart leapt into her mouth at the sound of a gruff voice which said; «Where are you going, my pretty girl, all alone in the woods?»

«I'm taking Grandma some cakes. She lives at the end of the path,» said Little Riding Hood in a faint voice.

When he heard this, the wolf (for it was the big bad wolf himself) politely asked: «Does Grandma live by herself?»

«Oh, yes,» replied Little Red Riding Hood, «and she never opens the door to strangers!»

«Goodbye. Perhaps we'll meet again,» replied the wolf. Then he loped away thinking to himself «I'll gobble the grandmother first, then lie in wait for the grandchild!» At last, the cottage came in sight. Knock! Knock! The wolf rapped on the door.

«Who's there?» cried Grandma from her bed.

«It's me, Little Red Riding Hood. I've brought you some cakes because you're ill,» replied the wolf, trying hard to hide his gruff voice.

«Lift the latch and come in,» said Grandma, unaware of anything amiss, till the horrible shadow appeared on the wall. Poor Grandma! For in one bound, the wolf leapt across the room, in a single mouthful swallowed the old lady. Soon after, Little Red Riding Hood tapped on the door.

«Grandma, can I come in?» she called.

Now, the wolf had put on the old lady's shawl and cap and slipped into the bed. Trying to imitate Grandma's quavering little voice, he replied, 'Open the latch and come in!»

  • «What a deep voice you have,» said the little girl in surprise.
  • «The better to greet you with,» said the wolf.
  • «Goodness, what big eyes you have.»
  • «The better to see you with.»

«And what big hands you have!» exclaimed Little Red Riding Hood, stepping over to the bed.

«The better to hug you with,» said the wolf.

«What a big mouth you have,» the little girl murmured in a weak voice.
